Referral Process

The first step to obtain any of the treatments provided at The Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine is to visit your General Practitioner for a letter of referral. If you are already a patient at another District General Hospital your Specialist Consultant will send this letter.

There are a number of clinics that you may be referred to;

Infertility clinics

  • Secondary care infertility clinics: Couples are referred into this clinic largely by their general practitioners for investigations and treatment of sub-fertility.
  • Tertiary care infertility clinics: Couples are referred into these clinics largely by their local gynaecologist who has performed the initial assessments and treatments. However as success has not been achieved or as a result of the investigation results, the couple are assessed to be suitable for treatments such as IVF, ICSI, Egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation, surgical sperm retrieval etc.
  • Male infertility clinic: We have a special infertility clinic which a urologist also attends and this enables you at access specialist advice e.g. that related to genital tract abnormalities, reconstructive surgery etc as and when necessary.

Repro Med Clinics

In these clinics patients with health problems due to gynaecology and endocrine disorders but those who are not in need of fertility assistance.

Specialist clinics

  • Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis: In this clinic with a genetic counsellor, the consultant sees patients who have those genetic, inheritable and life compromising disorders that can be identified in the embryos prior to transfer. In this way, normal embryos can be selected for transfer to avoid the risk of transmission of the inheritable familial disease.
  • Adolescent Gynaecology: In this clinic, young pre -pubertal girls of varying ages with gynaecological disorders are seen with a counsellor.
  • Late Reproductive Effects Clinic for Cancer patients: In this clinic long term survivors of cancer are seen so that possible fertility effects of their past cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy on can be assessed. Patients suffering from cancer requiring storage of eggs, sperm or embryos are seen throughout the week. All patients with storage or others upon referral have an opportunity to have a follow up discussion 1-2 years after they have completed their treatment.
