Referral & Treatments
The Referral process
The first step to obtain any of the treatments provided at the Leeds Reproductive Medicine Units is to visit your General Practitioner for a letter of referral. If you are already a patient at another District General Hospital your Specialist Consultant will send this letter.
There are a number of clinics that you may be referred to
- The gynaecology clinic
You may be seen in the gynaecology clinic if there are other problems as well as your infertility. - The infertility clinic
This is a special clinic dedicated for couples suffering from infertility. The clinic is staffed by specialist doctors and nurses who will take a detailed history and organise any investigations thought to be required, in addition to any tests that have been performed by your GP. - The Assisted Conception Clinic
This clinic is for couples where there is an established diagnosis of infertility and a form of assisted conception such as IVF or ICSI is required. This clinic is staffed by doctors who are experienced in all forms of assisted conception. Attendance will involved taking a detailed history, arranging any further investigations that are thought to be required and outlining the sorts of treatment that you may require. - The Joint Endocrinology/Infertility Clinic
This is a special clinic for couples who have a more complicated history and diagnosis, where specialist help from an Endocrinologist, who is an expert in how hormones work, will see you along with your infertility specialist. - Urology clinic
This clinic is for couples when there is an established diagnosis of male infertility e.g.previous vasectomy. Urologists and Infertility specialists will see you in this clinic. - Endocrinology clinic
This clinic is for couples when there is a diagnoses hormonal problem causing the infertility. An Endocrinologist and Infertility specialist will see you in this clinic. - The Male Infertility Clinic
This clinic is staffed by your fertility specialist and a Urologist, who specialises in male infertility. If it is thought that the man may require specific investigation or surgical treatment, you would be asked to attend this clinic.
In addition to these regular clinics we also have clinics held on a less frequent basis, when the need dictates, to deal with the genetic disorders that may require preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and for patients who have required treatment for cancer, and they have had fertility sparing treatment.
It is important that you both attend this clinic appointment. There will be issues that we need to discuss with you both. There may also be investigation that we need to organise for you that can be performed at that visit. We see the ‘problem’ as a joint ‘problem’ and believe that by attending together you can offer each other the physical and emotion support you may both need.
